Prayers

17th century nun's prayer

mariaLord,
Thou knowest better than I know myself that I am growing older and will some day will be old.
Keep me from the fatal habit of thinking I must say something on every subject and on every occasion.
Release me from craving to straighten out everybody's affairs.
Make me thoughtful but not moody: Helpful but not bossy.
With my vast store of wisdom, it seems a pity not to use it all, but thou knowest Lord that I want a few friends at the end.
Keep my mind free from the recital of less details; give me wings te get to the point.
Seal my lips on my aches and pains.
They are increasing, and love of rehearsing them is becoming sweeter as the years go by.
I dare not ask for grace enough to enjoy the tales of other pains, but held me to endure them with patience
.
I dare not ask for improved memory, but for a growing humility and a lessing cocksureness when my memory seems to clash with the memories of others.
Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be mistaken.
Keep me reasonably sweet; I do not want to be a saint - some of them are so hard to live with - but a sour old person is one of the crowning works of the devil.
Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places and talents in unexpected people.
And, give me, o lord, the grace to tell them so.
Amen.

Beannacht/Blessing

sunset3 On the day when
the weight deadens
on your shoulders
and you stumble,
may the clay dance
to balance you.
And when your eyes
freeze behind
the grey window
and the ghost of loss
gets in to you,
may a flock of colours,
indigo, red, green,
and azure blue
come to awaken in you
a meadow of delight.

When the canvas frays
in the currach of thought
and a stain of ocean
blackens beneath you,
may there come across the waters

Celtic prayer

sky4

God with me lying down,
God with me rising up,
God with me in each ray of light,
Nor I a ray of joy without Him,
Nor one ray without Him.

Christ with me sleeping,
Christ with me waking,
Christ with me watching,
Every day and night,
Each day and night.

God with me protecting,
The Lord with me directing,
The Spirit with me strengthening,
For ever and for evermore,
Ever and evermore, Amen.
Chief of chiefs, Amen.

Earth teach me to remember

woods

Earth teach me stillness as the grasses are stilled with the light
Earth teach me suffering as old stones suffer with memory
Earth teach me humility as blossoms are humble with beginning
Earth teach me caring as the mother who secures her young
Earth teach me courage as the tree which stands alone
Earth teach me limitation as the ant which crawls on the ground
Earth teach me resignation as the leaves die in the fall
Earth teach me regeneration as the seeds rises in the spring
Earth teach me to forget myself as melted snow forgets its life
Earth teach me to remember kindness as dry fields weep in the rain

Give us hearts to understand

2_leaves

Give us hearts to understand.
Never to take more from creation's beauty than we give.
Never to destroy wantonly for the furtherance of greed.
Never to deny to give our hands for the building of earth's beauty.
Never to take from her what we cannot use.
Give us hearts to understand.
That to destroy earth's music is to create confusion.
That to wreck hear appearance is to blind us to beauty.
That to callously pollute her fagrance is to make a house of stench.
That as we care for her she will care for us.
We have forgotten who we are.
We have sought only our own security.
We have exploited simply for our own ends.
We have distorted our owr knowledge.
We have abused our power.
Great Spirit, whose drylands thirst
help us to find the way to refresh your lands.
Great Spirit, whose waters are choked with debris and pollution
help us to find the way to cleanse your waters.
Great Spirit, whose beautiful earth grows ugly with misuse
help us to find the way to restore beauty to your handiwork
Great Spirit, whose creatures are being destroyed
help us to find a way to replenish them.
Great Spirit, whose gifts to us are being lost in selfishness and corruption
help us to find the way to restore our humanity.

God, I offer myself to Thee

candle

God, I offer my self to Thee - to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt.
Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will.
Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy power, Thy love, and Thy way of life.
May I do Thy will always.
